Fortuna Kit
New York Times article, New York State flag, newborn diapers, mylar emergency blanket, green
apple, photocopy, 24 x 36 in.
October, 2018, a New York Times cover story on asylum-seeking children, forcibly separated from their families, appearing in a Queens immigration court, read: “The judge ended each hearing with words of encouragement: ‘Good luck.’ ‘Buena suerte,’ repeated the translator, child after child.” In the now-fascist US, Fortuna (luck), trumps Justice. The phrase, carved into the fabric of American flags, left shreds or gaping holes, bordered in gold. Other works address the trauma of this policy with materials that evoke the body—food, emergency blankets, diapers—drawing policy and statistic into an uncomfortably intimate context.
