The number three is significant in Christianity. The president of the Mormon church has two counselors who assist him perpetually, a pattern that is repeated all throughout the leadership right down to the local churches. The church’s lay ministry operates on the basis that authority is issued by God alone, and those serving are therefore chosen, or ‘called.’ These shoes represent the ideal, and hence cannot be filled by anyone on earth, especially as there is historically and currently exclusion of men of color and women respectively from these positions of authority.
